Ok so i have a mac problem?

I am trying to repair this mac running OS X 10.4. the problem is that system profiler will not open. it has the bouncing app icon in the lower right hand corner but after a couple seconds it goes away and says it had to close unexpectedly, i thought id go and lok on forums n see if they had the answers and i thought i found it when i saw i could go into the terminal and enter system_profiler...one problem the terminal will not open either. any ideas? oh and i already ran disk utility to repair permissions and im guessing it doesnt have a dvd drive because it spit out my OS-x disk
