Best Iron for Sewing Projects?

I'm looking for a new iron that won't damage my fabrics like my current iron is doing at the moment. I've heard that some irons are preferred by sewers while others are not. What are the qualities I should look for when purchasing a new iron for sewing projects? I don't need a brand per se, just to know what to look for feature-wise when purchasing a new iron for sewing specifically. Thank you.
