What are types of small bred dogs that are short-haired?

Ok, My back yard is medium sized with a little grass. My dad is growing plants outside and he doesn't want to get a dog that would ruin them, and on top of that, he doesn't want one! So I am looking for a short-haired small dog that isn't aggressive and that can be an outdoor dog.
